    The Catcher In the Rye

I just finished The Catcher In the Rye, after reading of a shocking 1984 and in-between a few democracy / freedom works.

Holden Caulfield is not alone, horizontally (domestic and oversea) and vertically (among different generation). He serves as an icon of a frontier for the untaken road. Others then follow. A new era then formed.

In different countries at different periods, Holden might blend with different culture personalities, yet indeed introduce strong controversial disputes. Some Holdens might fall, but their efforts eventually breakthrough. The then Holden(s) become the next elites.

Holden(s) grow up in the middle class. His parents provide plenty that he is comfortable settled. Please note that by no means I show disrespect to the materially poor. The majority of those who are at a surviving level for meal-ly intakes more or less contribute less time or effort to such challenge.

Holden(s) is anxious, angry and depressing. He clearly sees no future of the current path that his ancestors have built and ready to be followed as most of his peers will do so. However, due to limited mental or environmental contact with the world outside, he does not know the direction ahead. He expresses his strong emotion by an action of breaking, breaking of rules, traditions, barriers, etc. He is struggling. He constantly seeks for the solution / resources for such reaction yet failed. He attempts to express his ideas, but as soon as they are slightly being addressed, he is instantly scared away. He is at the edge of wanting and unwanting. His fighting is recognized and encouraged by the very selected few wise, who foresee the future of this country lays on such youth group as Holdens.

Identically, there already are some Chinese Holens came along during the past 30-some years, the “Angry Youth”.

The frequency of such Holden(s) movement becomes shorter and shorter, influence spears broader and broader, voice stronger and stronger. Thanks to the multimedia application widely adopted.

Holden(s) should be welcomed. Tomorrow is always another day. The world is then advanced day after day. That is what I believe and in which I strongly have faith.
